Dead Donkey

An old farmer bought a donkey from another farmer for $100. They agreed to deliver it the next day. The following morning, the farmer drove up and said, “I’m sorry, but I have some bad news. The donkey died during the night.”

“Well, then, can I have my money back?” the elderly cultivator inquired.

“I can’t give it back to you right away. I spent it yesterday.” He replied sorrowfully.

“Okay, then. Just unload the donkey.”

What are you going to do with him?” he asked, quizzically.

“I’m gonna raffle him off.”

“You can’t raffle off a dead donkey!” the farmer exclaimed.

“Sure I can. I just won’t tell anyone he’s dead.”

A month later the two farmers met again in the marketplace. The young farmer asked, “So what happened with the dead donkey?”

“I raffled him off. I sold five hundred tickets at two dollars a piece and made an overall profit of $898.”

“Didn’t anyone complain?”

“Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back.”
