Christian Worldviews 104: The Simple Gospel Message

Back To Main
What People Are

Gospel means “good news” and Christianity’s Good News is very straightforward

  1. We have a sin condition we can’t recover from

  2. God established the Jewish religion to create a Law to show us our sin

  3. Jesus fulfilled the Law and died for our sins as the perfect sacrifice

  4. Anyone who believes in Jesus’ sacrifice will live eternally

1. Humanity sinned irreparably

Some religions may disagree with the scope of our sin condition or its intensity, but everyone will agree that sin is a constant human problem

The Judeo-Christian creation story thoroughly explains our sin condition

The first man and woman lived in perfect connection with God in the garden of Eden (Genesis 2)

  • They trusted God implicitly to where they didn’t understand nakedness until after they had sinned (Genesis 3:7)

The first woman sinned from Satan’s temptation while the first man watched, and then he followed in sin (Genesis 3)

  • Sin is doing anything against God’s law
  • Sin’s punishment in the Bible seems overly severe, but sin can’t coexist with God because of His attributes

Some people argue that this creation story is symbolic, but fail to express what it symbolizes

Sin has cursed humanity since the Fall

God has ejected us from Eden

Women have to endure extreme pain during the entire child-bearing process, and modern medicine can’t resolve it (Genesis 3:16)

  • On top of that, women now possess an insatiable desire to rule over men

Men are forced to work tirelessly to survive, even with hyper-specialized trades and advanced technologies (Genesis 3:17-19)

Humanity has lost all connection with God and nature

  • Our relationship with God has been severed to limited interaction and many liars claiming God’s authority
  • We’ve lost our connection with nature to where we can’t work in harmony with the world around us
  • We have difficulty with relationships among one another to where we can’t understand or comprehend others’ thoughts or feelings

Our eternally miserable state would have persisted if we had stayed in Eden and eaten from the Tree of Life (Genesis 3:22)

The ultimate consequence for our transgression is permanent death (Revelation 21:8)

It may feel unfair that we’re bearing our distant ancestors’ burden, but we’d all have repeated their mistake if we were given the same situation as they were

This severed relationship, however, wasn’t the end of the story, and God promised that Satan would be struck down later (Genesis 3:15)

2. The Jewish Law shows we can’t rebuild our way to God’s glory

Judaism gives 613 commandments to follow that cover every part of then-daily life (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy)

No human can follow all of the laws, especially since God requires perfection (Leviticus 19:2, Matthew 5:28, Romans 3:23)

Violating only one law condemns a person to eternal destruction in hell (Ezekiel 18:20, Matthew 10:28)

  • Though many people have disputed this claim, the Bible shows no evidence that people cease to exist or that hell isn’t eternal

We are all born into sin and stuck with its eternal consequences (Isaiah 64:6)

The Jewish Law references a Messiah who will save humanity (Jeremiah 23:5, Isaiah 11:2-5)

3. Jesus fulfilled that Jewish Law

The Messiah fulfilled hundreds of prophecies during His life on earth

  • The Messiah had to fulfill every prophecy (Psalm 40:7, Luke 24:44, Revelation 19:10)
  • The chances of any one person fulfilling a few dozen prophecies are astronomical

Outside of the Bible, plenty of evidence proves Jesus’ uniqueness

1. Jesus died by a public crucifixion, but they still haven’t found a body

  • A Roman guard had been stationed to protect it and was the most powerful military force at the time

2. After Jesus’ crucifixion, His disciples had real experiences they believed were His appearances

  • Jesus’ biological brother, James, had an experience he thought was a separate appearance of Jesus
  • The disciples changed from practicing tradesmen to fully willing to die for their message
  • Paul, a prominent Pharisee with nothing to gain from Jesus, experienced a similar appearing of Jesus and converted to Christianity

3. Jesus’ message was consistently proclaimed by many within 1-2 years from His crucifixion

  • If Jesus had been a successful scammer or magician, people wouldn’t have continued to proclaim His message after He died

Jesus’ fulfilled the Law to where anyone who wants to follow Him can believe and won’t have to live by the Law anymore (Matthew 5:17)

4. Repent and believe

Salvation is a one-time action of declaring Jesus is Lord and believing He died for your sins (Romans 10:9)

God promises believers will go to heaven, but also promises more (John 3:16, Romans 5:10, 1 John 4:9-10)

  • Beyond eternal life, Jesus promises an abundant life on this earth (John 10:10)
  • All Christians receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 12:13)
  • Following Jesus is a living, dynamic relationship with the one true God (Romans 8:31-39)
  • God promises that believers will receive an incorruptible and eternal crown of glory (1 Corinthians 9:24-25, 2 Timothy 4:8)
    • This crown may spiritually symbolize others brought to Christ through your testimony (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20)

Some Christian groups require getting baptized, praying a prayer, or becoming a member of their church

  • Baptism is a symbolic action of devotion, not a matter of salvation (1 Peter 3:21)
  • Praying a prayer is a symbolic action of commitment, but isn’t as important as the purpose and meaning behind it
  • Other activities like communion, baptism, and honoring the Sabbath are tied to your relationship with God but have nothing to do with your salvation

No specific denomination is exclusively correct or most accurate

  • A variety of churches often form from specific demographics that prefer to congregate together
  • Some churches, however, are more accurate than others
  • Some churches are complete cults

Speaking in tongues and baptism in the Holy Spirit are part of God’s work, but they’re not salvation (1 Corinthians 14)

  • Some people share a deep connection to God through tongues, but more on that later

Catholics say that purgatory can sort out unconfessed sins, but only one apocryphal passage mentions it (2 Maccabees 12:39-46)

  • The passage is a vague verse in a non-canonical text that could just as easily refer to the spiritually dead on this earth
  • Most people believe in purgatory to hope for a chance to postpone punishment for sins
